A Fanfare for Northrop In April 2014, iconic Northrop Auditorium will reopen as a center for creativity on the Twin Cities campus. To celebrate its new performance venues, Northrop and the U of M School of Music jointly announce a competition to compose a signature Northrop fanfare to indicate final seating for events. The fanfare will be premiered live during Northrop’s opening celebrations, April 4-6, 2014, and the composer and title will be credited prominently at the grand opening and in printed programs for all Northrop events in the future. 20th Annual U of M High School Honor Band The twentieth annual University of Minnesota High School Honor Band Weekend will be held on campus Friday, January 24 through Sunday, January 26, 2014. This will be an outstanding opportunity for approximately ninety of the upper Midwest’s finest young wind and percussion instrumentalists to rehearse and perform challenging wind music in Ted Mann Concert Hall. 2014 University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition The competition will be held on Wednesday, January 29 from 11 am to 4 pm. The winner(s) will perform with the University Symphony Orchestra (USO) on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. The competition is open to all full-time graduate and undergraduate music majors who have the approval of their applied teacher. Full-time status must be maintained for both fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters. USO Concerto Competition winners from 2012-13 may not compete. Marvin O. Mechelke II Piano Award The Mechelke Scholarship Competition is open to graduate piano students in even-numbered years (2014) and undergraduate piano majors in odd-numbered years (2015). The next competition will take place in the Mechelke home on Friday, April 25, 2014.
