Recordings:
If you would like your session (or part of it) recorded, you have two options:- Request your session to be recorded by a School of Music (SOM) recording engineer for an additional $25/hour (making the total $50/hour). It is not possible to request a particular sound engineer. Availability of a SOM recording engineer is subject to other performance and work schedules. Requesting a recording engineer through the SOM does not ensure staffing of your event.
- Record the event on your own. This could mean bringing in your own recording equipment, or hiring a recording engineer outside of the School of Music to record your session. If you would like a list of local recording engineers, you may contact Phillip O'Toole at otoole@umn.edu.
- Complete the Student Rental of Ultan Recital Hall request form (after checking the Ultan online calendar).
- If the requested hall time is available, your request will be forwarded to the audio department to check for staff availability.
- If staff is available, you will receive an email confirming your reservation and you will be billed both the Hall use fee ($25/hour) and the recording fee ($25/hour) for a total of $50/hour.
- If staff is NOT available, you can either request another time/date or you can keep your hall booking and record the event on your own.
Additional recording information:
The following recording formats are available from the School of Music: CD, DAT, Cassette Tape, and VHS Tape. You should be prepared to provide your own blank media for your recording session. The following tapes are recommended:
- DAT is the industry standard for archive quality and your best choice for long term, high quality audio preservation
- CD-R should be a name brand. Please do not supply a CD-RW as these are re-writeable, often unstable, and rarely can be played on a regular consumer CD-player.
- VHS should be a name brand blank tape. Please do not supply an S-VHS unless you have an S-VHS machine on which to view your tape. If you do use an S-VHS tape, please be sure to indicate this to the engineer, as adaptations need to be made for recording.
- The audio cassette should be a Type II High Bias. Recommended brands are Maxell, Sony, TDK, and Memorex.
- All School of Music recordings are made directly to 2-track (stereo). Please take the time to listen to the balance of the recording early in your recoding session. It will not be possible to adjust the levels of the different instrumentation after it has been recorded.
- The School of Music does not offer editing services. It is possible to reorganize movements or to select the best take of individual movements; however, the school does not own editing software for cross fading.
- Layout of demo CDs may be done by the recording engineer for your session or another technician at a later date. Demo CD layout is also charged at $25/hour.
Tuning:
During the course of the regular academic year, pianos are tuned on a regular basis. However, if you are concerned and want a special tuning, you may request one. A $75 fee will apply.
If you need an instrument tuned prior to your event, the following fees apply:- Piano tuning (subject to availability), $75 billed to your student account upon confirmation.
- Harpsichord tuning (subject to availability), $75 billed to your student account upon confirmation.
