Prepared Piano Guidelines
New guidelines have been established for students performing a work that requires the use of a prepared piano. Please read and adhere to the instructions below.
Before you begin any piano preparation on any instrument in Ferguson Hall, you must discuss the preparation with Ron Poire. He may be reached at poire001@umn.edu, Room 2 Ferguson Hall, or 612-624-8575. You will not be able to prepare any piano if it will cause permanent damage to the instrument. If you have any questions regarding the preparation, Ron Poire and Jason McCue (mccue005@umn.edu, Room 4 Ferguson Hall, 612-624-5098) are available to assist you.
When Room 100 receives positive confirmation from Ron, you will be permitted to reserve rehearsal times. Rehearsals using prepared piano will be limited to Room 85 only.
If you are performing a recital and using prepared piano, your recital must be scheduled during a weekday timeslot. Because prepared piano recitals require additional staffing, it is difficult and expensive to find assistance on the weekends.
The piano in Room 85 Ferguson Hall has been designated as the "performance prepared piano." For your recital (and warm-up period), this piano will be moved to Lloyd Ultan Recital Hall by the Lloyd Ultan Staff. This piano is the only piano that is to be prepared. DO NOT PREPARE EITHER PIANO REGULARLY HOUSED IN LLOYD ULTAN RECITAL HALL. In the event you are caught preparing an Ultan piano, your practice room privileges will be revoked, you will be charged a fine by the School of Music, and privileges for using the Lloyd Ultan Recital Hall will be revoked.
It is your responsibility to remove all preparation from the piano after your recital. When all appliances are removed from the piano, the Lloyd Ultan staff will return it to Room 85.
