Opera Outreach
Young music lovers are tomorrow's opera audiences. To develop and nurture future audiences, outreach to elementary, junior high and high schools has become a critical area of expansion for the University of Minnesota Opera Theatre. The traditional approach—a "field trip to the opera" for students—only exposes them to part of the process. When students see and participate in the many elements of an opera production—vocal training, costumes and makeup, set design, orchestra preparation—they learn more.
Our customized outreach programs can take many forms:
- "Visit the U programs featuring special dress rehearsals, backstage tours and Q&A sessions with the director and cast
- In-school performances by University opera students, including visual, aural and written supplementary materials
- The Summer Musical Theatre Workshop for middle school, high school and junior college students, focusing on preparation and presentation of scenes from great American musicals
