Audition Information

UNIVERSITY BAND & CAMPUS BAND: No formal audition required
Be sure to attend the first class meeting of this ensemble should you wish to participate:

WINDS
Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Symphony Orchestra
Ferguson Hall, Room 85

All new and returning students must audition. Auditions are 7 minutes in length and consist of two contrasting etudes or solo works of your choice (one more technical and one more lyrical) plus sight reading.

PERCUSSION
Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Symphony Orchestra
Ferguson Hall, Room 95

All new and returning percussionists must audition. Auditions are 6 minutes in length and consist of required excerpts. Required audition excerpts for percussion are available from Ferguson Hall, room 10.


About the Concert Bands

UNIVERSITY BAND/CAMPUS BAND
The University Band and Campus Band offer an opportunity to enjoy creating music with limited performance demands. The bands perform two concerts per year. A formal audition is not required.

SYMPHONIC BAND
The Symphonic Band is an ensemble of 70 to 80 select wind and percussion players. Although many members are music majors, the ensemble includes a number of undergraduate and graduate students from other disciplines. Symphonic Band performs four or five concerts each year. Admission is by audition only.

SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a select ensemble comprising 60 of the University’s finest graduate and undergraduate wind and percussion musicians. The ensemble performs five to six concerts on and off campus each academic year. Admission is by audition only.

ENSEMBLE-IN-RESIDENCE: Bergen Woodwind Quintet
The Bergen Woodwind Quintet is an ensemble-in-residence at the University of Minnesota School of Music. Each fall, the Quintet spends one-week in residence, offering master classes, recitals and one-on-one coaching to students.
