About the Choral Ensembles
MEN'S CHORUS
The Men’s Chorus services the University and Twin Cities community through
performances of glee club, folk, popular and classical repertoire. Concerts
include appearances at University of Minnesota and professional Twin Cities'
athletic events, Ted Mann Concert Hall, and Minnesota festivals. The chorus
collaborates with the Women’s Chorus, Minnesota Orchestra, community organizations,
other collegiate men’s choruses, and various University ensembles. Admission
is by audition only.
WOMEN'S CHORUS
The University Women’s Chorus presents choral music programs of classical,
folk, popular and global repertoire for female and mixed voices. Concerts
occur both on and off campus and include performances at Ted Mann Concert
Hall and at area festivals. The choir also collaborates with the Men’s Chorus,
Minnesota Orchestra, community organizations, other collegiate women’s choruses,
and various University ensembles. Admission is by audition only.
CONCERT CHOIR
The University Concert Choir participates in a variety of choral music exploring
classical and global repertoire for mixed chorus from the Renaissance through
the 20th century. Concerts, both on and off campus, include convention presentations,
touring, and collaborations with ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra,
other college and community choruses, and many School of Music ensembles.
Admission is by audition only.
CHAMBER SINGERS
The Chamber Singers is a mixed chorus of 24 to 32 singers that performs
music ranging from intimate unaccompanied pieces to works with instrumental
accompaniment. In the annual University of Minnesota Bach Festival, the
Chamber Singers perform major works by Bach. These concerts are broadcast
on Minnesota Public Radio. Chamber Singers have presented several world
premiere performances and in 1996 gave the American premiere of Scottish
composer James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross. Admission is
by audition only.
GOSPEL CHOIR
The Gospel Choir rehearses one evening a week and presents traditional and
contemporary gospel music in performances both on and off campus. The group
is led by the prominent composer, arranger, producer and pianist Sanford
Moore, who is founder and director of the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble
Moore by Four. The Gospel Choir is a campus ensemble open to anyone in the
University community who enjoys singing. No audition is required.
OPERA WORKSHOP
The Opera Theatre presents one fully staged operatic production each semester.
For more than 30 years under the direction of Professor Vern Sutton, this
ensemble has won notable prizes and has produced singers who now perform
on major stages across the U.S. and Europe. The Opera Theatre provides students
with the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of fully staged opera
productions. Admission is by audition only.
