David Damschroder trained in mathematics, keyboard performance, and music theory, earning graduate degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Yale University. He has taught at the University of Minnesota since 1983, offering undergraduate courses on tonal harmony and form and graduate seminars on the history of music theory and Schenkerian analysis. His books include Music Theory from Zarlino to Schenker (Pendragon Press), Listen and Sing (Schirmer/Wadsworth), Foundations of Music and Musicianship (Schirmer/Wadsworth), and Thinking About Harmony: Perspectives from the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries (Cambridge University Press). His current research is focused on harmony in the music of Franz Schubert. Complementing his scholarly and analytical work are occasional performances on fortepiano. Damschroder has traveled extensively throughout Europe and India. His interests outside of music include Renaissance art, German literature, and yoga.
